One of the most common mechanisms of injury for the low back when shoveling snow is flexion/rotation injury.  That is bending and twisting tossing the snow.  This torques the discs in the spine and puts a lot of stress on the cartilage, leading to possible tearing or bulging.  Reference the attached article for good injury prevention tips.
